Generative Engine Optimization, in plain English.
GEO means getting your business named when someone asks an AI tool who to hire. You may have also seen it called AEO, answer engine optimization, or AI search optimization. Same work, different labels. Here is what it actually involves and what it is worth.
What it actually means
For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on a page of blue links. That still matters. But a growing share of people now just ask. They open ChatGPT, or Google’s AI answer, or Perplexity, and they type something like “who is the best roofer near me.” The tool gives back a short list of names.
If your business is on that list, you get the call. If it is not, you never find out the conversation happened. Generative Engine Optimization is the work of making sure your business is one of the names that comes back.
It is not a trick and it is not a loophole. It is mostly making your business legible: clear signals about who you are and what you do, content that answers the questions buyers actually ask, and enough verifiable trust that a machine is willing to vouch for you.
We measured how bad it is
In our 2026 Local Visibility Study we took 64 local service businesses that Google Maps already recommends, then asked four AI tools who the best option was in each trade and town. Here is how often each one named the business.
ChatGPT: 23 of 64
The most widely used AI tool named just over a third. Claude named the fewest, at 17.
Perplexity: 24 of 64
The most generous of the four, and still well under half.
Reviews did not help
Of 42 businesses with 100 or more reviews, 12 were named by none of the four.

GEO, AEO, AI search: is there a difference?
Not really. Generative Engine Optimization and Answer Engine Optimization describe the same goal, which is being named in an AI answer. GEO came out of academic research, AEO came out of the marketing world, and plenty of people just say AI search. Anyone telling you these are three separate services you need to buy is selling you three names for one job.
We call it AI search because that is what business owners actually say. The work is the same either way.
The mistake worth avoiding
Chasing AI visibility on its own is a bad trade. Our study found businesses sitting at the top of Google Maps that were invisible in search results, and businesses ranking in search that no AI tool would name. Customers use all three, so fixing one and ignoring the others just moves the hole around.
The work that gets you named by AI is largely the same work that gets you found on Google and the map. Do it once, properly, and you show up in all three places.
