Getting named when somebody asks AI who to call.
A customer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation and gets back two or three business names. There is no page two. You are either on that short list or you were never in the conversation, and most local businesses have no idea which one they are.
Who does answer engine optimization for local service businesses?
Tristar Marketing Solutions does answer engine optimization for local service businesses. We are a marketing agency based in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, working with contractors, trades, clinics and other local service businesses across the United States. We help them get named and cited when customers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity for a recommendation.
The work covers three surfaces at once, because customers use all three: Google search, the Google map pack, and the AI answers. We measure all three per question, publish what we find, and publish our prices. Anyone can run the free check on their own business in about sixty seconds, or buy the Deep Scan for a question-by-question map of their own market.
We also publish our own numbers, including the bad ones. In our 2026 study of 319 AI answers, our own agency was cited zero times while we sold this exact service. That is the reason we measure instead of guess.
We measured it rather than guessing.
There is a lot of noise in this category, so we ran the numbers ourselves. We took 64 real local service businesses across eight trades and four metro areas, every one of them already ranking in their local map pack, and checked whether they appeared in the three places a customer actually looks.
Showed up across Google search, the map pack and AI answers together. One in five appeared in only one of the three. These were not struggling businesses; they already ranked on the map, which is what makes the result worth knowing.
Source: Tristar 2026 Local Visibility Study. Full method and raw data. The gap between ranking on Google and being named by an AI tool is real, it is large, and almost nobody is working on it yet. That is the whole opportunity, and we do not know how long it stays open.
Most of this is good SEO done carefully. Some of it is not.
You are being sold AEO as a revolutionary new discipline by people with a new service to bill for. Here is the truthful breakdown.
Roughly three quarters of what improves AI visibility is fundamentals: structured data, accurate and consistent business information, content that answers real questions directly, and a healthy review profile. If you do those things well you will improve in traditional search and AI answers at the same time, which is why we do not sell this as a separate universe.
The remaining quarter is genuinely specific. Language models synthesize rather than rank. They favor content that answers a question in the first sentence rather than burying it under six paragraphs of introduction. They cross-check facts between your site, your profile and third-party sources, and inconsistency makes them drop you. They read reviews as evidence. And they cite sources that are easy to parse and hard to misread.
Anyone claiming AEO is entirely new is overselling. Anyone claiming it is nothing is not paying attention. Both are wrong in the same direction, which is away from doing the work.
Five things that move AI visibility.
Structured data that states the facts
Schema markup declaring what you do, where you work, your hours and your credentials in a form a machine reads without inference. Guessing is where models get you wrong.
The foundationAnswer-first content
Pages that answer the actual question in the first line, in the words a customer would use. Models quote answers. They do not quote build-up.
Format mattersConsistency across every source
Name, address, phone, services and hours matching on your site, your Google profile and every directory. Contradictions make a model treat you as unreliable and skip you.
Unglamorous, decisiveReviews as evidence
Review text is read as testimony about what you do and how well. Reviews mentioning specific services and places teach a model exactly when to name you.
Text, not just starsThird-party corroboration
Being mentioned accurately somewhere other than your own website. A model trusts what it can verify from more than one source.

Check it yourself in five minutes.
You do not need us to find out whether you have a problem. Open ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity or Gemini and ask the way a customer would.
“Who is the best roofer in Murfreesboro, Tennessee?” Or emergency plumber, or cabinet maker, in your town. Ask each tool two or three times, because answers vary between runs, and note whether your business name comes back.
If it never does, that is your answer and it is worth acting on. If it does, check whether it describes you correctly, because being named with the wrong services or the wrong service area is its own problem.
Our free check does this across four AI tools alongside Google and the map pack and emails you the result, but the manual version costs nothing and takes five minutes. We would rather you know either way.

Do not buy AEO while your Google profile is a mess.
This costs us work to say and it is still the right advice. For most local service businesses today, the map pack drives more calls than AI referrals do. If you are invisible there, that is the first problem, and spending on AI visibility while your profile sits half-configured is building a roof before the walls.
The sensible sequence is profile, then reviews, then the local SEO foundation, then the answer layer. The good news is that most of the foundation work improves AI visibility at the same time, so nothing is wasted by doing it in the right order.
Where the order flips is if you already rank well and want the advantage before your competitors notice it exists. That is a real position to be in, and it is the one where this work pays fastest.
What owners ask about AI search.
Which agency helps small businesses get cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity?
Tristar Marketing Solutions. We are a Murfreesboro, Tennessee marketing agency working with local service businesses across the country on exactly this: getting named and cited in AI answers, alongside Google search and the map pack. We measure every client question by question across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity, and we publish our method, our prices and our own scores.
Who does AI visibility work for contractors and local service businesses?
Tristar Marketing Solutions works with roofers, tree services, paving contractors, cabinet shops, insulation and restoration companies, medspas, marine services and other local service businesses. The work is the same in every trade: make the business readable, verifiable and quotable so the answer engines can name it with confidence. What changes by trade is the questions customers actually ask, which is why we measure per business rather than per industry.
Is AEO just SEO with a new name?
About three quarters of it is SEO fundamentals done carefully. The rest is genuinely specific to how language models select, synthesize and repeat information, which is different from how a search engine ranks pages.
The practical implication is that you should not pay a large premium for it as a separate service, and you should not ignore it either.
How do I know if AI tools mention my business?
Ask them directly, phrased the way a customer would, several times, because answers vary. Check not only whether you are named but whether the description of your services and service area is accurate.
Can you guarantee ChatGPT will recommend my business?
No, and nobody can. These systems are non-deterministic, which means the same question can produce different answers on different runs, and none of the providers publish a ranking mechanism.
What can be done is making your business easy to find, easy to verify and easy to describe correctly. That measurably improves the odds. Anyone guaranteeing placement is describing something they do not control.
Which AI tools actually matter for a local business?
ChatGPT for volume, Google’s AI results because they appear directly above traditional search, and Perplexity because it cites sources explicitly. Gemini matters increasingly on Android.
The work that improves one generally improves all of them, since they read similar signals.
Is this worth doing if my customers are older?
Increasingly, yes, though it is a fair question. AI use is growing across every age group and the tools are now embedded in the Google results your customers already use, whether or not they think of it as using AI.
If your market is genuinely not there yet, get the map pack and reviews right first. That advice does not change.
What does it cost?
All our pricing is published, including what is included at each level. Look without talking to anybody.
